Hebrew Bible Lecture 3 January 11, 2008 Why do various ancient Babylonian and Canaanite texts on the creation of the world actually relate or have something to tell us about the Hebrew Bible creation story. o The Israelites lived in Canaan along with other groups such as the Phoenicians (who lived on the coast), others in Ugarit (huge trove of documents discovered there in 1920s). Hebrew, Ugaritic, Phoenician are all dialects of Canaanite. So all of these different cultures draw on one source of culture. This is way stories from Ugarit, etc. are relevant to what we are studying. o Babylon o Akkadian (Assyrian)= a Semitic language that is related to south Semitic languages. It is a whole different language but linguistically related to Canaanite and Arabic. o Ashur= capital of the Assyrian culture. o Hittites o Amorites= Canaanite group, may be that Ugaritic is a type of Amorite, they traveled into Assyria and eventually Mesopotamia.
