Hebrew Bible Class January 14, 2008 o The terminology, plot details are common within different versions of the creation story (i.e. Canaanite and Babylonian/Ugaritic). Generally has to deal with an uprising (one where the newer god defeats older god and one where newer gods are easily put down by older god. o The name of the enemies are the same in Israelite and Ugaritic Baal epic. Israel: Yam (Ocean), Nahar (Ocean current), monster with many heads. Ugaritic: lotan/Leviathan, Tanin (ocean dragon), monster with seven heads. o The monster with seven heads comes up again in the book of Revelations. o Genesis 1 o Description of creation is completely different than what we find in Psalms, Isaiah, and other creation stories. They show creation happening after the new god defeats older god. o Here, god creates the world for reasons completely unknown. o We are told early on that God created Yam (the sea), and the Tanins (sea monsters). However, Yam is not an enemy nor is Tanin its ally. o Tehom (the wind that hovers over the deep) is the equivalent of Ti’amat. Here god’s wind is peacefully hovering over tehom. In Enuma Elish, Marduk defeats Tiamat with his wind. o
