Hebrew Bible Lecture 7 o Leviticus o It is the center of the Torah (Pentateuch). We are trying to move away from our contemporary mind set and trying to get into the mind set of the ancient near east. Book of Leviticus is where you started (it is what mattered—of vital importance). o Different types of sacrifice with different rules. What is the purpose of sacrifice, and all the different types, and what does it tell us about priestly theology? o Scholars have attempted to divide within P the different authors. Example: Firmage (from course packet) talks about H, holiness in the last part (chapter?) of Leviticus. o Purpose of Sacrifice o Sacrifice means to give something up/to do without something—this is the English definition. In that sense of the word, sacrifice does play a role, you give up something in order to give it to god. However, if you look at the rules in Leviticus, it doesn’t seem to match this definition of sacrifice. o Types of sacrifice : Olah: that which goes up, a whole offering. Minha: gift. For both types of sacrifice: from a person’s point of view, you are giving up this entire animal. Others: zevah ha-shelamim: a slaughter of holiness. Only parts of the offering are put on the altar, much of the meat ends up being eating by the person who is giving up the animal—some of the best parts are going to the human beings and his family or guests. This type has a lot of sub-sacrifices.
