Hebrew Bible Lecture 10 January 30, 2008 o Legal revision of D (D revises a lot of law codes from Exodus). We are dealing with same cases and structures. Clearly that was in front of the authors of D. o What is characteristic of the D law code? o Stress on 1 temple in Jerasulem. Despite what other books say, some sacred things that used to be done at the temple are now done at home. Some things were taken out of the religious context. o There is a degree of attention to the plight of a woman in distress. Laws for slaves used to apply only to men, now women as well. Exodus is worried about the father of virgin who is seduced. He has been wronged. In D, the attention is on the “virgin” and how her rights should be protected. o A little more specifically concerned with appealing to Israelites. o Look at the vector and direction that the law codes are pointing to. The direction that the legal development is going and can be applied to any religion. There is a pattern here. Possibly, D is a development of the law code over time.
