Hebrew Bible Lecture o 2 Sam. 7:8…God guarantees that David’s dynasty will endure forever. Descendants will be punished by God through other nations (Assyrians, Babylonians), however, his dynasty will still rule forever. o This is a promise made for all eternity. o Another covenant form is being made here that was known in the Ancient near east. (recall: suzerainty). o In this covenant form, the arrow goes in only one direction and responsibilities go in only one direction. A typical king will reward a faithful servant by giving him land. “I the king of … am giving you this land forever”. This word forever shows up in the document a few times. Just as God is doing with the family of David, by using a legal form known from the ancient near east. o Here, the upper ranking party is agreeing to act on behalf of the vassal. The lower ranking party does not have any specific responsibilities. o
