o Exodus 34:5-7 starts by saying God is compassionate gracious, but then goes on to say that god does punish the sinner, god punishes the son, grandson, and great grandson of sinner. He remembers the sin of the parents against the children. o Seems to be a contradictory statement. Talks of mercy then ends by talking of great grandchildren on sinners. This text is recited on Yom Kippur but cuts off where god’s mercy ends. o Think of the intellectual honesty of those reading it. o Numbers 14:14 after certain guys go to scope out the land of Canaan they come back with negative remarks. People are upset and want to go back. Moses tells him to please forgive the people. o Moses quotes slightly abbreviated text above (from Exodus). He reminds god that he likes to punish grandchildren of sinners. Seems to be counter productive. Quotes the wrong part of the passage. o Why does Moses quote wrong part (part of passage that deals with god’s vengeance)? And why does a passage starting mercy go on to speak of god’s vengeance unfair doctrine ? o Y (Yonan?)
