MIDTERM 1 VOCABULARY Apocrypha : books that some religions consider sacred. Not copied in Hebrew, so have only  been preserved in Greek and Latin. Some books in Hebrew bible reference apocrypha which  helps us to get insight into the history of the Hebrew bible.  Canon : list of the books of the bible.  Tanakh : Also known as Hebrew bible. Stands for Torah (historical—and higher status), Nevi’im  (prophetic), Ketuvim (the writings), the three parts of the bible.  Miqra : Bible—similar to Qran (Koran) Midrash : old way of reading the bible.  Tetragrammaton : four letter name of God: YHWH. So sacred that is not pronounced.  Akkadian  (Assyrian): region and people of Mesopotamia occupying the N part of Babylonia. The  Akkadians used a Semitic language that is related to south Semitic languages. It is a whole  different language but linguistically related to Canaanite and Arabic. Ashur : capital of the Assyrian culture.  Hittites:  people living in ancient Turkey. 1500 BCE. Spoke an indo-European (somewhat related  to Greek) language not Semitic language. Ugaritic:  an extinct Semitic language of northern Syria Amorites : a Canaanite people living in the land east and west of the Jordan. Used in the Bible  interchangeably with Canaanites (though the latter generally referred to people still living, while  Amorites especially referred to the people of the past). May be that Ugaritic is a type of Amorite,
