o Aphrodite: love, desire, Demeter: Fertility, crops, sustenance. o Vocab o Eleusis: place where Demeter retires when she is angry at the gods because of Persephone’s abduction. o Epiphany : when a god reveals himself, displays himself to mortals, ambrosia: immortal, food of the gods. o **Art: The Abduction of Persephone. Death is abducting the daughter of life. o Zeus has given his daughter in marriage to Hades (his brother). o Myth are often attached to specific places, i.e. Eleusis. o **Art: (krater: mix wine and water) The return of Persephone: Persephone has eaten seeds of Pomegranate, and because she has partaken something of death, she can not return for good as if nothing has happened. Hekate is present, helper of Demeter, holding torches. o Demeter teaches sacred rites to the ruler of Eleusis. o What is at stake? What human issues are being raised?
