Mythology Lecture 10 February 7, 2008 Continue books 1-4… o Evolution of Telemachus with the help of Athena. Athena stirs up Telemachus. It is quite rare in greek myth to focus on the development of a character. Characters do not change much, but he is an exception. (also, Achilles could be thought of as having gone through a change). o “Adventures of Telemachus”: a metaphor for youths who are coming of age. o Athena takes on two disguises: Mentis and Mentor (man who Odysseus left in charge of Ithaca when he went away). They are father figures for him. That is the kind of relation that Athena builds. Both names are built on the word men, which has to do with mental, actions of the mind. Recall: she is goddess of intelligence, so she stirs up his intelligence as well. o She leaves “in his spirit determination and courage”… and “remembered his father”… Earlier, he was not sure if Odysseus was his father. The feeling of being his son is now reconnected. He also goes to sit with the suitors and also makes a
