2 Problem 2 (20 points) The Crown Zellerbach No. 1 was the discovery well in the Hooker (Rodessa) Field. The production data during the first year of production are given in Table 1. How would you classify this reservoir? Why? Note: You must give the correct reason for your classification to get full credit. There will be no credit for a lucky guess. Solution to Problem 2 Classification: Retrograde condensate gas. Reason for Classification: The stock tank oil API gravities of 55 and 66 fall in the range for retrograde condensate gas and wet gas but out of the range for volatile oil and black oil. Similarly, the initial producing gas oil ratio of over 30,000 scf/STB also is in the range for retrograde condensate gas and wet gas. It is certainly outside the range for volatile oil and black oil. So, the decision that needs to be made is whether this is a retrograde condensate gas or a wet gas. What other information can we glean from the monthly production data? Let’s look at the trend in the stock tank oil API gravity. From May to October, it was constant at 55 degrees. In November, it increased to 56 degrees and remained at this value till March when the last production data were available. This increase in the stock tank oil API gravity tips the balance in favor of a retrograde condensate gas because the stock tank oil API gravity will increase when the reservoir pressure falls below the upper dew point pressure of the gas. Based on the available data, it would appear that has happened in this case.
