1 PGE 312 - FALL 2008 Physical and Chemical Behavior of Petroleum Fluids I Solution Key Problem 1 (30 points) Figure 1 shows an idealized saturated oil reservoir with a gas cap (free gas). Because the oil and the free gas in the gas cap are in phase equilibrium, the oil is at its bubble point and the gas cap gas is at its dew point. Therefore, the initial reservoir pressure of 4000 psia is the bubble point pressure of the oil and the dew point pressure of the gas cap gas at the reservoir temperature of 200 F. ˚ Figure 1. Idealized saturated oil reservoir. A sample of the gas cap gas and a sample of the reservoir oil were sent to a PVT Lab for measurements. The results were as follows: Stock tank oil API gravity = 35º API Oil formation volume factor at initial conditions = 1.25 reservoir barrels/STB Table 1 shows the fluid compositions returned by the PVT Lab. Unfortunately, the PVT report failed to indicate which composition belonged to the gas cap gas and which belonged to the oil. For reference purposes, the compositions have been labeled as belonging to Fluid A and Fluid B. Gas Cap Oil Zone
