1 PGE 312 - FALL 2008 Physical and Chemical Behavior of Petroleum Fluids I Final Examination, 3 Hours Closed Book & Notes It will be in your best interest to attempt all the questions. Please budget your time accordingly. Problem 1 (20 points) Pure propane is stored in a washed out salt cavern in the US Gulf Coast by a Utility Company for use in an emergency. Here are the facts about this storage facility. Mass of propane in storage = 600x10 6 lb mass Volume of the salt cavern = 20x10 6 cubic feet Temperature of the salt cavern = 150 ! F Saturated liquid density of propane at 150 ! F = 26.52 lb mass/cu foot Saturated vapor density of propane at 150 ! F = 3.74 lb mass/cu foot Vapor pressure of propane at 150 ! F = 360 psia Critical temperature of propane = 206.06 ! F a. Calculate the volume of liquid propane in the carven. b. Sketch a Pressure versus Specific Volume (P-V) phase diagram for the system and show the state of the propane on the phase diagram with a dot. Please mark on your P-V diagram all known numerical values of pressure and specific volume.

2 Problem 2 (20 points) Five thousand pound moles (5000 lb moles) of a binary mixture of methane and octane are confined in a vessel in which the volume of the mixture and the pressure in the vessel can be varied. The total composition of the mixture and the k-values (equilibrium ratios) at various pressures at a constant temperature of interest are given in Table 1.
