Lecture 8 2/2/2010 The Edo Period X - I » (1600-1868) - period of sustained peace - growth of cities - rise of urban culture (1675-1725) The Tokugawa Peace - system of alternate attendance (sankin koutai ) required daimyous to stay in Edo every other year two residencies = diminished their wealth and kept them in check couldn’t overthrow Tokugawa wife and children required to stay in Edo - rigid class system samurai peasants produced their own food artisans merchants sold things they did not create - problems with the class system peasants weren’t allowed to move was upside down: merchants richest; samurai poorest samurai were out of work after the war; disenfranchised ronin “ masterless samurai” hired as debt collectors, etc. - policy of national seclusion ( sakoku lost interest in outside right at the time of industrialization hard to say how Japan would have developed without this policy Growth of Cities
