Ideology and Policies 2 The United States and the Soviet Union, now known as Russia aligned to fight Japan and Germany in World War II. After a long and drilling war the United States and Soviet Union defeated Germany and Japan. Because of this defeat Germany was dividing into four parts. Three out of four in which governed by the United States, France, and Great Britain. The United States wanted to work on changing Germany into a democracy. The last part of Germany the Soviet Union governs. The Soviet Union also ended up governing eastern European counties. Because of the Soviet Union’s greed to control the world, the Cold War started between them and the United States. The Cold War came down to the United States and the Soviet Union talking badly about each other. They both where afraid the other would drop nuclear weapons.
