Roy 1 Amit Roy - 4124959 Jenn M ENG1100 AC November 26, 2009 Positive Implications of Genetically Modified Food The current global population is over 6 billion people and it is growing exponentially every minute. However, the amount of farming land available is not increasing at a fast enough rate to feed this growing population. On the contrary, as the population around the world increases, areas that were previously farming lands are being industrialized to support the needs of the economy. This results in a relatively small food supply supporting a large population. Moreover, farming the same land continually causes the land to lose its fertility and the crops to lose their nutritional value. In order to increase the yield farmers induce excessive amounts of chemicals into the soil. Even though these chemicals help increase the farmers’ productivity, they can cause health hazards and they can be harmful to the environment. This is seen in most of the over-populated Third World countries to cause starvation, poverty and diseases due to nutrition deficiency. Technological improvements, such as, genetically modified foods have shown tremendous benefits in addressing these crises. Genetic modification involves adding genes from one species into the DNA of another species. Through the addition of these new genes, scientists create genetically modified foods which consist of many new characteristics that nature cannot provide (Food safety). The current research shows that genetically modifying foods can positively impact farmers’ yields, while producing large quantities of significantly healthier foods that can also improve the environment.

Roy 2 The main implication of genetically modified foods is that it is more productive and has a larger yield. Genetically modified foods have an inbuilt resistance to pests and herbicides, whereas normal foods do not. Insects are a major agricultural problem because farmers lose a large amount of crop annually due to pest attacks. These insects can damage the crop both in the field and after they are stored away for the season. Globally, 25% of all crops are destroyed every year because of insect attacks. Farmers typically use chemical pesticides to prevent the insects from destroying the crops. However, excessive usage of these pesticides can cause long term health hazards and negative consumer reactions to those products. These pesticides can also damage the water supply in different ways; either through mixing with rainwater which washes the chemicals off the plants and into the rivers, or through being absorbed by the soil and harming the ground- water.
