`Eduardo De la Pena-Barreiro UNIT 77 1. Although air handler cabinets may be made of galvanized steel, there are still areas that may be subject to corrosion. Why? The sheet metal edge where the steel is cut and any scratches deeper than the galvanized surface will expose the bare steel. This will eventually lead to rust. Care must be taken when installing or performing maintenance on a unit not to scratch the surface. 2. Describe the two general types of AHU’s. There are two general types of air handling units that are used for central plant systems: ones with remote air handling units, called fan coil units, and ones with central station air handling units. 3. List the components of an FCU. Each one of these units has fans, water coils, filters, a fresh air supply, and a control system. 4. Often around fluorescent lights in a drop ceiling there is a narrow slit. What is the purpose and advantages of application? That opening is the return air. The advantage of having a return air around the fluorescents is that the heat generated by the light is pulled back up into the return and is not radiated as much into the occupied space. 5. Where are larger FCU’s most commonly used? Larger fan coil units are used to condition offices, stores, etc., where common air distribution is feasible. These resemble cabinets of self contained store conditioners. 6. In FCU’s that cooling coils, how is the dehumidification condensate disposed? This condensate falls into a condensate pan below the coil and is removed by gravity flow to an open sanitary drain.
