EXPLANATION OF AN ISSUE; MAY ALSO BE CALLED A "SYNTHESIS"
Paper Goal: This paper is to inform readers about a current, debatable issue. Again, you
should avoid all topics listed on your syllabus as "banned." Your goal is to explain in detail
the key features/beliefs of each side of the issue. What are the main points of view? What
reasons does each side use to support the point of view? Only in the conclusion will you
take a stance as to which side is stronger, has a more viable point of view, is more cogent.
Before the conclusion the paper is to be objective, with no opinion or evaluation. The
outline/structure for this paper is fairly straightforward:
Introduction-draw in the reader
Background-how did the issue come about? Why is it timely, or controversial?
