1/29/2010 EE 310 Electronic Circuit Design I Spring 2010 Assignment 3 Due: Friday, February 5, in class MOSFET Operation and Characteristics MOSFETs at DC Basic MOSFET Applications The MOSFET—metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor—finds use as both an analog amplifier and a digital switch. Virtually all of today’s microprocessor and memory products are constructed with MOSFETs. In this device, the voltage on one terminal (gate) controls the current through the other pair of terminals (drain and source). Compared to the bipolar junction transistor (BJT), the MOSFET is smaller to fabricate and leads to high-density circuits; thus, it has become ubiquitous in modern IC design. We will study DC circuits that use discrete resistors, but keep in mind that IC designers avoid the use of resistors whenever possible. Next, we study the operation of a MOSFET as a switch and as an amplifier. When used as a switch, the MOSFET excels compared to the BJT. As an amplifier, in some respects its performance is
