Gen Biology #13 Birds Johnny Page 10.02.07 Birds are a fascinating species. They first start as an egg, then evolve into the feather friends we all love to watch and eat. Some suggest birds evolved from the pterodactyl, which instead of feathers had membranes for wings. Most biologists believe now that the first bird was the Archaeopteryx which lived over 150 million yrs ago. Today scientists suggest that there are approximately 8500 different species of birds, with new species being found now more often than ever before. Birds have a very distinct way of communicating with other birds. Some use there voice to let other know of danger or even to ward off their enemies. Some use their voice, or song, to attract their mates. The most unusual of birds, is the Raven, which throughout history has been known as a great bird, to now being associated with evil. Some cultures believe that the raven started with the ancient gods, who used them to collect water for them, but if they were late in delivering the water the gods would condemn them to eternal thirst.
