5 ELEC2220 Auburn University 1-1. Hardware Organization 1-1-1. CPU (Central Processing Unit) ALU, CU, Registers ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) – A combinational logic circuit performing various operations (arithmetic, logic, shift, etc.) – Data path – Adder, multiplier, shifter, etc. – Width of ALU determines precision of operations – Provides the status of each instruction (result) • Flags (Z, S, C, O, etc.) ELEC2220 Auburn University 1-1. Hardware Organization • CU (Control Unit) – Instruction cycle • Fetch an instruction • Decode it • Fetch an additional operand if necessary • Execute it • Store the result if necessary – Interpret machine language instructions – Compute addresses of instructions, data, and I/O devices. – Generate control signals specifying the action to be taken by each unit at each step.
