(Or go buy the excellent Robert Alter translation of Genesis, with its helpful notes). Read Genesis 1-3, then answer the questions below. 1. What events occur in Genesis 1-3? What is the significance of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? 2. What is the outcome of Adam and Eve’s quest for knowledge—of their failure to abide by the arche- typal proscription against the One Forbidden Thing? 3. What is the function of the serpent in this story? Other than Satan (a later interpretation), what might it represent? 4. Why does Yahweh ( AKA El, Elohim [plural form], The Lord) want folks kept away from the Tree of Life ? 5. What etiologic elements do you notice in this account—what causes or origins does it explain? 6.
