Ethan Martinez 2/28/10 A1 Formal Lab: Aspirin Synthesis Background of Aspirins: The most widely used drug in the world, aspirin can relieve pain, lower fever, and reduce inflammation. At first being made from boiling the bark of the white willow tree is now created from Salicylic Acid and Acetic Anhydride for laboratory cases. In 1893, Hoffman and Eichengrun made the first active ingredient in aspirin, Acetylsalicylic Acid. Purpose of the Lab: The main objective of this lab is to produce a aspirin that will be checked for its purity and the percent yield from the reaction. Materials: 50 ml Erlenmeyer Flask Electronic Balance Salicylic Acid Acetic Anhydride Graduated Cylinder Phosphoric Acid Clamp 5 100 ml Beakers Water Distilled and Regular Wire Gauze Ring Stand Bunsen Burner Stirring Rod Ice and Ice cold Water Buchner Funnel Spatula 6 Test Tubes Toluene
