Next, a glass rod is rubbed on silk, to create a charge on the silk and the glass rod. Both rods were suspended on a rod support and the fur and or silk is brought near the rods, and observations are recorded. Small 1/8 inch squares are placed on the table and the rods are brought near the paper, one at a time and observations are recorded. A pith ball suspended from a support is then used to test the charge on the rods by observing the reaction of the pith ball when the charged glass rod or charged rubber rod is brought near. Next, a charged rubber rod is suspended and a second charged rubber rod is brought near and observations are recorded. A charged glass rod is then brought near the suspended rubber rod and observations are recorded. Lastly a metal rod is brought near the charged rubber rod and observations are recorded. The above procedure is then repeated with a suspended charged glass rod, and then tested with a charged second glass rod and then tested with a charged rubber rod and lastly a metal rod; observations are recorded for all tests. PART II: Charging an electroscope by contact: Using the proof plane, sufficient charge is transferred from a rubber rod to the conducting sphere of the electroscope by touching the proof plane the rubber rod and touching the now charged proof plane to the sphere so there is a divergence seen on the gold leaves. Next, bring a glass rod close to the electroscope, then a charged rubber rod. Touch the charged glass rod to the charged electroscope sphere. Transfer enough charge from the charged glass rod to the electroscope using the same method above, until there is a 30 degree divergence of the gold leaves and repeat the procedure of bringing the charged rubber rod and the charged glass rod near, and then touch the charged rubber rod to the electroscope. Record all observations of the above procedures. PART III: Charging an electroscope by induction: Bring a charged rubber rod near the electroscope to produce a leaf divergence of 30 degrees, with the charged rubber rod still near, touch the sphere of the electroscope with the other hand and then withdraw the hand, then withdraw the rubber rod.
