Stephanie Leath Lab Partners: Andrew, Mohamad Section: 016 Date: 2/24/09 @ 1930 Determination of e/m of the Electron Purpose: In this experiment we are to determine the charge-to-mass (e/m) of the electron Procedure: 1. First, make sure the toggle switch is up for the e/m measurement. 2. Next, turn the power supply controls to their lowest setting and adjust the knob for the Helmholtz coils to the OFF position. 3. Turn on the power supplies and meters. Set the Helmholtz coil voltage to 9 volts. 4. The powers supply range worked with is 150-300 volts. It is important not to exceed 300 volts. 5. Turn Helmholtz coil clockwise and watch the voltmeter to make sure it does not exceed 2 Amperes. 6. Wait for the cathode to heat up before adjusting the voltage and the Helmholtz coil to make the coil go directly through the middle of the electron beam. 7. Measure the radius of the electron beam and align the beam with its reflection. 8. Record six to ten different accelerating voltages, making sure not to go out of the 150-300 volts range. Formulae:
