ANNOUNCEMENT Because of the strike, there will be no lecture on Thursday. However, I will meet with anyone who chooses to show up at the circular courtyard near the entrance of North Gate and we can discuss public education, and perhaps talk about the kind of university you would like to have and matters related to this. There are 2 general attitudes towards education. One attitude is that we provide you with information and skills that you pay for; another attitude is that we provide you with learning and education, something that changes who you are so that you can better go out into society and make a contribution. LECTURE St. Thierry and Pedagogy. Last time we talked about Thierry’s Pedagogy of Love , which is the title I gave it. It’s a text about love, which is a key issue in Christian theology and the scriptures and the Gospels especially. “Pedagogy” is a word that emphasizes key issues in the monastic tradition, something we saw in Anthony. The focus is on training and the style of the self, what I have called self fashioning where you engage with yourself and with the scriptures. All this feeds into pedagogy. Perhaps the key idea for Thierry is the identification of love and the divine and the basis of pedagogy for monastic life. The divine and love are identified; love emerges from the divine. In loving, humans share in the divine and are the divine. In today’s text by Tauler we see theosis, which is a key element in Christian theology; the idea is that in engaging in spiritual practices, we have a divinization of man and a return to the divine or making man like God. “Similitude” is a key term where you are mirroring the divine, or participating in the divine, or returning to it, as it is variously articulated. Thierry is concerned with love as a moment of where you engage in divination of human nature. A key supporting idea is found in Genesis where man is said to be created in the image of God. So the human mind, or the activity of the human mind is made in the image of the divine trinity. So being an image of God is a foundation for going back to God or becoming like God. Another element in this is that the divine is corrupted when it emerges in humans who can turn away from God. Thierry is concerned with the restoration of the original relation where man is in an image of God at the beginning of time. Restoration comes through the progressive assimilation of human beings to divine love which is often described as an ascent, a progress, or in stages; through assimilation you become more like the divine
