Format: There will be one question (possibly with multiple parts) per lab. There were nine labs, so there will be nine questions. The question with the lowest score will be dropped. Lab 12, Electric Fields, will not be dropped if it is the lowest score. Instructions: Sign in as soon as you come into the room. Only two people allowed per workstation. Nothing is allowed on the desktop except the test, pencil, and calculator. You must not remove any pages from the text; not even the formula sheets. When you complete the exam, the instructor must check you out. You may ask the instructor questions if you get stuck, or for clarification. What you’ll need to know: For any experiment, be able to identify at least two sources of error where appropriate. Lab 12 – Electric Fields If you have a point charge of a particular sign, you should know what its equipotential and electric field lines look like. You should be able to describe them with words. You should know how the strengths of the lines relate to the charge. Remember the two equations: E = 1 4 πε 0 q r 2 ˆ r V = 1 4 πε 0 q r How do these equations allow you to describe the lines? Note that the electric field is a vector, so it has direction. The potential is not a vector; it only has magnitude. Remember that the electric field lines cross the equipotential lines at 90 degrees. So if you are given some equipotential lines, be able to draw electric field lines, or describe the electric field lines. You should know which direction the electric field lines point with respect to the equipotential lines (high to low, or low to high?).
