Give examples. - Bandwidth transmission levels o Optical Carriers in ANSI o SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) in ITU-T - Formatted signals o Synchronous Transfer Signals (STSs) in ANSI o Synchronous Transfer Modules (STMs) in ITU-T Describe the basic principles of SONET multiplexing. o An STS-N equal to ‘N’ byte – interleaving STS-1s. The STS-N stream is formed by taking 1 byte from each STS-1. List and compare the functions performed by each of the SONET network devices. o Terminals and Terminal Multiplexers o Regenerators o Add/drop multiplexers (ADM) o Digital Cross-connect Switches (DCSs) What is SONET layering and what are the functions performed by the section, line, and path layers? o SONET layers are transmission protocols which solves the operational and maintenance problems. o Photonic Layer – deals with optical transmission of the STS frames o Section Layer – Manage the transport of STS frames over photonic layers. It handles error monitoring, framing and signal scrambling.
