Scantrons (green and white) for tests, available at the bookstore. Goggles and gloves will be required for certain labs. Lab coats or aprons are recommended, but optional, for certain labs. CATALOG DESCRIPTION A presentation of selected principles in biological science for the non-science major, including the cell concept, the organization of multi-cellular systems, plants and animals as organized systems, and man in relation to his environment. Lecture: 3 hours; Laboratory: 3 hours COURSE OBJECTIVES This course introduces non-science majors to the principles and theories of biology and their applications to modern society. It includes the hierarchy of organization of living things from the molecular level to organisms and their interrelationships in global ecosystems. It covers the diversity of the six kingdoms with emphasis on the anatomical and physiological functions of plants and animals. The ultimate goal is for students to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the diversity of life on earth and how it relates to their lives. TEACHING METHODS LECTURE/LABORATORY: This course is divided into one 2-hour and 50-minute lecture period and one 2-hour and 50-minute laboratory period per week. Lecture will be supplemented by films, slides, etc., when applicable. Labs will include both activities in the lab room and field trips. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES There will be eight exams/quizzes in the lecture part of the course. The questions will usually be multiple choice. The final exam will not be comprehensive. The laboratory assignments (total percentage in lab) will be worth approximately 20% of the total grade. 1 Your grade will be determined as follows: 90 - 100% = A 8 exams/quizzes (800 points) 80 - 89% = B 1 lab grade (200 points possible. Total lab percentage 70 - 79% = C worth 20% of grade, the same as 2 exams) 60 - 69% = D Final grade is calculated using 1000 points possible....
