Chelsea Fisher AED 203 April 17, 2010 Assignment: Approaches to Teaching Mathematical Concepts Some ways one might teach basic number sense or problem-solving to students in a lower elementary grade would be to provide students with a group of objects that vary in size where the objects can be perceived with their hands and can be compared by the relative size of things, such as coins, beads, pretzels, buttons, etc. Provide students with the opportunity to match objects to number of fingers. Describe or discuss the numbers and count the numbers such as how many are there, how many more or less is required or how many more are needed. Provide students with number names to groups of objects which are different in sizes and shapes, so that students can grasp the comparison of quantity and concept of quality. Provide students with a means to understand seriation, the ordering of objects, then quantities and numbers.
