Diary entry: February 6, 1883 Dear Diary, My name is Feng Chu. I am 15 years old. Mother said my name means “Phoenix” and that I was a firecracker when I was little. Father told mother that it was a fitting name and was proud to call me Daughter. I got to United States of America on December 28, 1869. We came to a place called San Francisco, California. After we arrived, we were taken to a place called Calvert, Texas. ( Edward J. M. Rhoads, TSHA Online) That was in January 1870. It is a very big place and I wished Mother was here with Father and me. She was too ill to travel, so Grandmother and Mother stayed in China. Father was working for the railroad and I cook and clean for us. The people here are not very nice to us. They use hurtful words and look at us with anger in there eyes. I stay in the house most of the time, only going out side to wash the laundry and hang it to dry. Many asked Father why we wanted to come to America. Father told them that life
