It is 8 am. The man steps up to the plate and hefts his bat. He watches as the pitcher begins his wind up, glares at him, and sends the ball flying his way. He swings, and misses. Again, the pitcher throws the ball, and again the bat hits only air. The batter steps back and shakes off, trying hard to concentrate. He moves back to the plate and nods to the pitcher. This time he barely even sees the ball pass him before the umpire yells "Strike! You're out!" The batter is furious. Now, he knows, he will only be getting 3 million dollars this year. It is 8 am. The sound of a siren jerks him awake. He jumps up and slides down the pole, trying to control his mess of hair. The firetruck speeds down the street, lights flashing and horns wailing. They arrived at the house, and he tried not to gasp. The three story building was engulfed in flames from the second story up, and there was a lady standing in the attic window, screaming and yelling, terrified. The men jumped to work, connecting the hose to the fire hydrant, and spraying the building with the frigid water. The woman's screams became more shrill, and he
