Type of data transfer (block  vs. character) Character devices transfer data as  individual ACSII characters (serial ports,  parallel ports, tape drives) Block devices transfer data in a set  group of bytes (floppy drives, hard  drives, CD-ROMS, etc.) ls –l /dev/driver_ID  will list the type of  transfer

Device Driver Major Numbers The major number define the basic  type  of  drive.  It is easer, however, to use the appropriate  alphanumeric characters: /dev/fd  for floppy drives /dev/hd  for IDE hard drives /dev/sd  for SCSI drives /dev/lp  for parallel port printers etc
