The effects of globalization on poverty Globalization is often held responsible for the very high number of poor people in the world. A first idea of the poorest areas in the world can be obtained by looking at Figure 1.1 below, representing the subdivision adopted by the United Nations and that we have been using in this book, among developed (blue), developing (orange) and least developed (red) countries. Countries designated by the International Monetary Fund in the April 2009 World Economic Outlook [1] as advanced economies are in blue, while countries designated as emerging and developing economies are in orange and red; of these, those designated by the United Nations [2] as least developed countries are in red, while others are in orange.
