Video Notes:  Change Makers – The Struggle for Consumer Rights There are local, state, and national levels of Consumerism President Kennedy delivered the 1 st  message to Congress on Consumer Rights What is a Consumer? All of us; we all conduct transactions; goods/services for money or a promise to  pay money Transaction in the marketplace is the ultimate expression of the political system  and the way the economy works Sellers/Producers vs. Consumers – Government is trying to balance the two  entities and decides what rules will be established and then enforces those rules. Consumer Spending is 2/3 of total economic activity (compared to business and  government economic activity). However, few in a boardroom decide what we buy. Consumers “vote” by  not buying products, but this is a reactive rather than proactive approach.  Therefore, the products produced are not driven by consumer decisions,
