(5 points) When is a file descriptor assigned to a file? At the time that it is opened. Grading: 1 point for trying, 5 pts for correct answer. 1b. (5 points) Where is it stored? In the open file table – see Fig. 11.2 of your textbook. Grading: 1 point for trying, 5 pts for correct answer. 1c. (5 points) Can two different files have the same file descriptor? If they are both open at the same time, they can’t. If they are open at different times, they can. Grading: 1 point for trying, 5 pts for at least one of the above answers. 1d. (5 points) How does the file descriptor contribute to efficiency? The open file table stores info for just the open files, not all the files that exist on the disk system. This table is therefore small, and can be stored in DRAM, and accessed quickly. Grading: 1 point for trying, 3 pts for partial answer, 5 pts for correct answer. 2. Suppose that a specific file requires 10 blocks. With linked allocation , the block addresses and pointers are as follows: Block # Block address Pointer to next block address Modified pointer 1 3 7 7 2 7 13 13 3 13 21
