Chapter 5 Genes that travel together more often than not exhibit genetic linkage . Recombination is the separation of genes on the same chromosome, which results in new gene combinations not seen in previous generations in the progeny. Recombination Progeny can result in two ways 1) from the recombination of genes on the same chromosome during gamete formation 2) from the independent assortment of genes on non-homologous chromosomes The farther apart two genes are, the greater the probability of separation through recombination The rarely two genes separate, the more likely it is that they are close to each other. Thus, geneticists can use data about how often genes separate during transmission to map the genes’ relative locations on a chromosome. Some genes on the same chromosome assort together more often than not Two genes that are located on the same chromosome are said to be syntenic The slash symbol, (/) is used to separate genes found on chromosomes of a pair
