Unformatted text preview: Gun Control and the Second Amendment Sarah Jo Hoyt COM220 Final Project Guns affect the way we live in the United States. More than 30,000 people die each year, because of firearms. The Second Amendment, as time goes on is one of the most paramount debates ever. Even though the Second Amendment attests that we have the right to bear arms, gun control helps to save lives, protect our military, and is very useful in animal population management. Most crimes committed are with the use of firearms. In 1997, the United States alone had more than 15,289 murders. Of these, 10,369 were from the use of firearms. In the US during 1997, there were approximately 7,927,000 violent crimes. Of these, 691,000 were committed with the use of firearms (Agresti, 1999). More recently the declining and convenient use of guns in an industrialized nation, the Second Amendment has become a great debate. Guns are no longer needed for daily use to live. They have become used by undisciplined people for unnecessary and at times evil purposes. The problem is that the amendment was created for muzzle-loader owners of the time. Now guns have become machines for killing wrongfully and not just hunting rifles for food. Firearms have been established for hundreds of years without being used as weapons for humans against humans, other than in times of war. Firearms have been in American homes since 1776, and were not linked to violence until more recent years. Most crimes now are committed with the use of firearms....
