Experiment 4 - Recycling Aluminum Introduction Alum ( potassium aluminum sulfate) was prepared from aluminum according to the reaction: 2 Al(s)+ 2 KOH(aq) + 4 H 2 SO 4 (aq)+ 22 H 2 O (l) 2 KAl(SO 4 ) 2 .12H 2 O(s)+ 3 H 2 (g) A theoretical yield of 23 g of alum was prepared using gravity and vacuum filtrations. Procedure I cut small squares of aluminum for a total of 1.3 g and recorded the mass. After cutting the aluminum into small pieces, I put them in a 600 mL beaker. In the fume hood, 65.4 mL of 2.0 M KOH were added to the beaker. The mixture was heated and observations were recorded. While heating(25-30 minutes),I added a small amount water to replace the quantity lost by evaporation(twice).Stopped heating when gas production ceased. I used gravity filtration to remove solid residue in solution. Rinsed with 6.7 mL water and discarded the residue Obtained 26.1 mL of H 2 SO 4 (10.0 M).Added 6.54 mL to clear solution in beaker.I added the rest of the acid solution while gently warming the mixture and stirring.
