Diversity, Ethics, and Rapid Change 2 Introduction In today’s local and global economy, the need for a diverse work environment that is created by management is a key factor in the success of any company. One particular company in mind is that of Southwest Airlines. Southwest.com (2008) states “the mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit.” This statement while strong clearly identifies Southwest Airlines as a company that is rich in diversity and high on ethics. Not only have managers helped create an environment that is conducive to the success of managers, but to those of individual contributors as well. In today’s airline industry, Southwest Airlines survival hinges on its ability to implement change rapidly. In this paper, the types of diverse, ethical, and rapid changing processes will be discussed, to show why Southwest Airlines is such a successful company in its industry. Diversity and Southwest Airlines Southwest Airlines has long been known for its enviable customer service. This is because employees love what they do, and have confidence in the direction that management is taking the airline. Based on the fact that employees feel the culture and diverse environment provided by Southwest Airlines employees remain motivated to maintain this reputation. Working together as a family and team, and not just as individuals, builds greater spirits in employees. Further, Hein (1999) provides that “culturally, having a working atmosphere that is fun and flexible is what motivates employees as well;” thus creating a diverse atmosphere. (Hein, 1999) An ambiance of respect exists when it comes to the way Southwest Airlines’ managers treat their employees, which can be attested to the fact that Herb Kelleher, co-founder and former

Diversity, Ethics, and Rapid Change 3 chairman and CEO of Southwest Airlines, has always instilled this ambiance in his employees. (Southwest.com, 2008) Managers plan a course of action that includes and accepts ideas from all individuals, which in turn makes individuals feel a sense of belonging. These methods and plans of action are then used to enhance processes within Southwest Airlines, which is known to be a part of the planning and organizing stages in a manager’s function. By creating a diverse environment, Southwest Airlines’ management will continue to help employees feel included in many of the decision processes created by management, which helps to keep employees motivated to do a good job.
