Richard Salvagno Death of a Salesman/Survivor Unifying Ideas The American Dream - Prosperity found in liberty. To find happiness and success through freedom. Originally stated by James Truslow Adams in his 1931 book Epic of America. “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” Arthur Miller Worked his way through college by doing menial jobs. Saved enough to attend the University of Michigan. Became the night editor of the school newspaper. 1940 married his college sweetheart who was the daughter of an insurance salesman. Was exempt from military service due to a knee injury from high school football. Death of a Salesman won a Pulitzer Prize for best drama and ran for 742 performances. Investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952 Also wrote The Crucible, his most frequently produced work. Based on the Salem Witch Trials and HUAC. Died of hearth failure after a battle with cancer, pneumonia, and congestive heart disease. Considered to be one of the greatest dramatists of the twentieth century Characters Willy –“Low Man”. Idolizes Dave Singleman to become well liked and rich. He spends most of his time dreaming instead of actually acting. He is obsessed with the post-war interpretation of the American Dream. But his view of the Dream is that success is measured in material possessions and rank. Biff - Unfortunately he cannot escape his past or what he was taught as a child. He comes
