VP to President • First non-elected President • Ford faced a difficult situation, he had to help the US emerge from its worst political scandal • Ford’s VP would be Nelson Rockefeller B. Domestic Affairs 1. The Nixon Pardon • Without consulting anyone, Ford called a press conference for September 8, 1974 • He gave a full & total pardon to Nixon for any, or if there was any wrong doing • Though some felt elated that this terrible period of American history was behind us, others doubted his integrity. 2. Economy • By 1974, inflation was at about 11% • Unemployment at 5.6% – As inflation and unemployment rose, economists called this stalled and stagnant economy…. STAGFLATION • Construction starts were very slow, interest rates very high • By the time Ford became President, we were in a recession
