What is/how to be a perfect Hindu 1a) VEDAS- written 1500 BC - Emphasize   R itual P erformance . Includes hymns, spells, songs. Sounds of Vedas more important  than meaning of context o R - Brahmins/priests held power - First 3 Vedas written for Brahmin class   o Rig Veda- sacrificial songs o Yajur Veda- directions for sacrifice o Sama Veda-? o Atharva Veda- for commoners, deals with everyday gods.  - Brahmanas- peak of priesthood power and ritualism- focus on rituals and not gods - How are Gods portrayed?  Impersonal, distant. Female gods have no personality and doesn’t seem to play imp role Devotion to 1 god (ex: Krishna) emphasized as path to salvation Gods concerned about creationism and bigger pic- not about how men should act. Vishnu Krishna = incarnation of Vishnu, in human form, could live in earth.  Surya= compared to human brides
