- Drinking as a constructive act., a way of life, one element of a given culture - French wine has been defined as ‘a national tresure’ (Uline 1995:524) - French wine press a whole range of social relations that refer to a complex and dynamic set of meanings and values - Caves Particulieres - Saint Vincent Tournante - Durand 1994:820 ‘Through its soil, its people, its history, its culture, customes, daily life, literature or songs, France is inextricably linked to the vine and to wine.’ - Many scholars such as Theodore Zeldin, Roland Barthes define wine as a ‘totem drink’ and underline its importance to French culture - Geroges Durand 3 main types of memory associated with wine : personal, national and cultural - Wine drinking has become increasingly detached from the act of eating become a unique act of consumption - Bourdieu(1979) has argued that the hierarchy of wines became identified with the social hierarchy. -
