In “Mother Savage” Guy De Maupassant states how even during the Franco-Prussianwar, there are innocent victims on both sides. Mother Sauvage is a prime example of an innocentcharacter due to her son Victor’s passing, and how unfortunate it was. Critics say this is the worstpart of the war, after she received a letter in regards to the passing. According to the Author,Mother Sauvage also exemplifies a revengeful character. After Victor’s death, Mother Sauvagekilled four Prussian soldiers in retaliation. Mother Sauvage set Serval’s cottage on fire andwalked away, leading to the death of those four soldiers. Mother Sauvage knows how importantit is for the soldier’s families to know that their loved ones had died. De Maupassant made itknown to the readers that Mother Sauvage was caring, due to her actions she took when askingthe soldiers to write down their information on slips of paper.
