1 Lecture 1: PIC 10B Todd Wittman Syllabus Highlights s Tuesdays you meet your TA in discussion classroom. s Thursdays meet your TA in the PIC Lab. s Midterms are in class Mon 2/1 and Mon 3/1. s Final is Sun 3/14, 3:00-6:00pm. s This is a 5-credit course. So we expect a lot of you!

2 Grading System s Exam 1 20% s Exam 2 20% s Final Exam 30% s Homework 30% s Drop lowest midterm. s One midterm exam 20% s Final Exam 50% s Homework 30% •Your grade will be calculated two ways. •The method that gives the higher numerical score will be used to determine your course letter grade. Homework s Every HW has a programming and written part. r Program due Thursday 6:00pm, submitted electronically. r Written due Friday 11:00am, turned in at start of lecture. s You must use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. s Microsoft software will be available for download after the 2nd week. Or bring 2 blank CDs and burn a copy at the PIC Lab. You can work at home, but you are responsible for correctly submitting the HW. s Homework will not be accepted by e-mail. s No late HW will ever be accepted. Period.
3 Theme for PIC 10B s PIC 10A was about how to write C++. s PIC 10B is about algorithms and data structures. s An algorithm is a procedure or method for performing a certain task. r e.g. Searching a database, Adding a record to the database s A data structure is a container or database to store data. r e.g. Vectors, Arrays s We will learn several data structures, because there is no "perfect" data structure. r Linked Lists, Stacks, Queues, Binary Trees, Heaps, Hash Tables s The overall question for this course is: How do we handle a large amount of data?
