MMIS 500: Management Information Systems (3 credits) Spring 2010 Second Session Instructor: Gail Brooks-286-8021 [email protected] Office Hours: Monday/Wednesday 12-2:30 and by appointment Course Description This course will explore the management of information systems and related information technologies (IS/IT) as a part of a broader socio-technical system, and their impacts on people and processes that extend well beyond organizational boundaries. Also, subjective and debatable issues associated with IS/IT will be discussed. Accordingly, critical thinking is an important part of this course and is essential for an analysis and understanding of important issues associated with the management aspects of information systems. Course Objectives Evaluate and appraise the role and importance of information systems in today’s business environment. Show and distinguish specifically how information systems support different business functions and processes. Rate and compare how information systems support management functions such as strategic planning, competitive advantage and decision making. Analyze the changes associated with online business operations over the past several years and their increased dependence on information systems. Categorize and discuss the challenges involved in building an information system, both from a management, security and operational perspective. Evaluate, compare and measure the challenges of integrating information systems into a variety of business environments. Detect, discover and investigate the ethical, social and political challenges involved in using information systems in today’s business environment.
