HIST 142 10/1/09 I. Secular Clergy a. Archbishops, bishops, and parish priests b. Convents - show translation effort c. Full sensory experience i. Vivid murals – beauty of heavens; fiery damnation d. Colonial relationship forced i. Church and clergy but also political and economical II. Indian a. Colonial term: carries condescension and oppression connotation b. Reason: i. Stern writes of grand design that Spaniards put in place by the 1570s ii. Grand Design Features: 1. Making Indians – forced resettlement (called congregacion in New Spain, reduccion in Peru) a. Reduce people by bringing them together and concentrating them in one area b. Do not understand why they live secluded lives – so force them closer together (strategy originally for missionary purposes; can only convert them if they can reach them efficiently) c. Later it was a cultural purpose: Civilized = Urban Cities or Towns 2. Regular tribute payments a. Effort to replace encomenderos and regulate the tribute demands
