Unformatted text preview: Exam N0. 3 ChE 317 Spring 2010 RB. Eldridge Problem No. 1 150 ptsl Coal as fed to a boiler contains 2.5 wt % moisture (water). On the dry basis the coal analysis (wt percent) is C: 80 %, H: 6 %, O: 8 %, ash: 6%. The flue gas analysis (mole percent) is — C02: 14.0 %, CO: 0.4%, 02: 5.6 %, N2: 80.0 %. The air used has a water dew point of 50 °F. The barometer is reading an atmospheric pressure of 29.90 in Hg. Calculate the water dewpoint of the stack gas. Problem No. 2 (20 pts) Air at 1 atm and 80 °C is fed to a chiller. The air contains water vapor at 15 degrees of superheat. The air stream is fed to the chiller where 50 percent of the water in the feed condenses. The air and water stream leaving the chiller are the same temperature and 1 atm pressure. At what temperature must the chiller operate ? Problem No. 3 (15 pts) A gas is flowing at a rate of 100,000 scfh (standard cubic feet per hour). What is the actual volumetric flow rate is the flowing pressure is 50 atm and the temperature is 140 °F. Do not assume ideal gas behavior. The gas critical temperature is 40 °F and the critical pressure is 14.3 atm. HINT: - What is your major ? Problem No. 4 (15 pts) Calculate the dew point temperature of a 20 mole percent n-pentane / 30 mole percent n-hexane / 50 mole percent n-heptane /mixture at 1 atm. j/ 4' W “W”- «ww ~mw3a—4ijmww, 1‘ M2— 9 y I: & X W 2/ ‘.,/.W,...M.....,,._A ., . _, ,TWW_C7‘)__K:H,M“—Hw_amm“. «~w-n_._‘.~.m VHW.»,,...._V.W__V m. «WWW», , ..., w iWWQWW ‘WWM WWWMWWWWWEWWéxWM¢MMWW.MWWMWWWW~WMWWr § 0. i (‘F Tran = 79‘? a2; by f” =, 0477 2950 = /.a- -F‘ 6.277 //¢‘r : 47;} 17927;: : 4"? _MV’J ‘ w M!
