Intro Middletown Hospital is a nonprofit hospital that has 200 beds and 20 emergency beds in the emergency department. On a daily average the emergency department handles between 95-100 patients. The CEO of the hospital has been receiving many complaints about long waits for care and poor service. The CEO authorizes a Six Sigma Team to analyze root cause and provide recommendations for improvement. Upon analysis, most of those complaints come from patients seen between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. 70% of the emergency department admissions occur between those hours. The Six Sigma Team must have a good understanding of the process improvement proposal to improve performance and address the complaints in the emergency department. The process must identify the bottleneck and improve the current process performance, describe the data to collect and collection methods, identify methods to analyze the bottleneck using capacity planning, analyze scheduling and controlling techniques with regard to the effect of service availability and make recommendations on staffing or alternative sources of care (UOP 2010, syllabus).
