Christopher Neff ENSC 481 Chapters 11, 12 Chapter 11 3. Why should a project manager emphasize group rewards over individual rewards? Since most project work is a mutual effort it would makes sense that the reward system encourages teamwork. Project work is mutually dependent and it can be very difficult to distinguish who truly deserves individual recognition. The unity of the group can be undermined if members feel that others are getting better treatment than others. Amity between group members can evaporate only to become replaced by internal strife. Any distractions can take up a lot of energy that could otherwise be focused on completing the project. Individual rewards should be used with discretion. 5. When would it be appropriate to hold a formal team-building session on a project? Formal team-building sessions should be used when such activities will improve the performance of the project team. At the start of a project it’s best to develop a team identity among a group of strangers. The formal sessions would be useful in identifying any dysfunctional behavior as well as re-energizing the team to higher levels of performance. One mistake project managers make is that they resort to formal team-building activities after they realize the team is in trouble. 2. Assume that you have the following decision-making options: (1) make the decision on your own with available information, (2) consult others before making a decision, and (3) call a meeting and reach a consensus, seeking to arrive at a final decision everyone can agree on.
